Spare a thought about the unrelenting schedule of AKB48. Waking up early in the morning for work which carries on until late at night – it’s not easy being an idol in the most popular group in Japan. For 2 of the senbatsu members, this punishing routine has finally caught up with them and they had to pull out of their alloted slot to meet the fans at a handshake event at Tokyo Big Sight. I didn’t realise that each handshake slot for each members lasts 90 mins. For the event at Tokyo Big Sight Tomochin was scheduled to do this 6 times (6 x 90mins = 540mins – 9 hours in total!) but she could only manage to do 3. She felt unwell after the 3rd slot and went to the hospital where they diagnosed that she had acute gastritis. Fair play to Tomochin – she did try to come back (I know how much AKB48 members don’t like to disappoint their fans) but her condition didn’t improve so her final 3 slots were cancelled.
Acchan was another girl who had to cancel 1 handshake slot. During the 5th slot she felt unwell. Exhaustion and overwork was the reason for her ill health. I don’t think we as fans realise just how hard the senbatsu members work and how little vacation time they get. Come on Aki-P, lay off these girls and give them a break from time to time.
I hope they both get well very quickly.
